It’s now nearly four years since I brought you MyTop (another of my enduring themes introduced at the Prince’s Trust ‘State of the ICT Nation” dinners – See Things have Changed below)
Tonight the MyTop concept came yet another step closer with Warner Bros. launching a Facebook app enabling users to purchase and view films from within their Facebook page. Thomas Gewecke, head of digital distribution at Warner, said “the film will be shown from inside a page on the network, leaving viewers free to continue communicating with their friends” See FT Facebook to host film rental experiment.
This is the whole concept behind MyTop. Ie that you will have one portal that follows you around from the Cloud allowing you access ‘Anytime, Anyplace and from Any device”. Judging how people have taken to multitasking, I do see people watching a film from within Facebook whilst communicating with their friends. It just ‘legitimises’ what people do already lying on the sofa with their iPads whilst watching the TV.
Anyway, I wasn’t the only one to take it seriously. Netflix shares dropped 5% on the news.
