Clik here to view.Remember the old adage “Revenues for vanity, Profits for sanity”? There have been countless reports recently about Apple losing out in the smartphone stakes to Google’s Android. It’s a bit like saying “General Motors sells more cars than BMW” and somehow inferring that all things GM are better than BMW despite GM having to be saved from bankruptcy and BMW being consistently profitable throughout!
Anyway, today StrategyEye carried an interesting report entitled Apple accounts for 51% of all mobile phone profits despite holding a mere 4.2% market share overall and 17% of the smartphone market. (Source reports from Asymco and Timetric) Asymco reported that Apple makes $250 operating profit on every iPhone sold compared to $75 for RIM (the #2). The rest are mere ‘also rans’ in comparison.
So Google Android might well win in the market share and revenue stakes, but give me profitability everytime! Although people who know me well might say that is not completely true – completing the adage “Revenues for Vanity, Profits for Sanity, Cash for Reality”. Apple currently has a cashpile of $60+ billion.
