Cisco uppity over Microsoft’s Skype deal

Cisco logoMicrosoft may have closed the $8.5bn Skype acquisition Skype Microsoft(seeMicrosoft confirms Skype deal) last October following regulatory approval on both sides on the pond but that hasn’t stopped Cisco launching an appeal. It does not want to reverse the decision  - not that it would stand a chance of doing that in our opinion - but it does want the commission to rule that Microsoft should adhere to open interoperability standards.

What’s really going on is a fight for the video comms market. Microsoft is integrating Skype (which has c700m users) with its Lync comms offering and Cisco fears being sidelined in the video calling market at a result. Although it is possible for a Lync user to use something other than Skype it is not easy and it is down to the enterprise/consumer to make it all work. Cisco’s appeal does raise a valid issue although the prime reason for the action is that it helps Cisco promote its own cause (naturally), but at the outside it might be enough of a distraction to temporarily check Microsoft’s progress.
