iPad3
I can remember a time when I’d watch Coronation Street with anticipation of the plot. Now, likely as not, I’ve read the plot spoilers. Same applied today with the launch of the ‘New iPad’. Apple under Steve Jobs had the ability to surprise. But everything we heard this afternoon had been well trailed by ‘the pundits’ in advance. And there was no ‘and one more thing’.

Of course, the new iPad is impressive. The retina screen looks dazzling – but we knew that was coming. Also LTE connectivity (you will be waiting for a long time to get that in the UK) and Siri. Price kept the same but iPad2 will be kept in production as a lower cost entry iPad. I particularly liked the new iPhoto.

iPad v PCs
Apple also announced a new Apple TV with iCloud compatibility plus HD. Nothing greatly exciting here and it is certainly NOT the Apple iTV that we expect for later in the year.

So, this is a very professional product evolution with Apple majoring on how the iPad is the device of the ‘post-PC’ era, Tim Cook showed a chart where the iPad in Q4 2011 outsold all PCs from each of the individual major suppliers. Indeed, forecasters are now suggesting that by 2016 tablets will outsell all PCs (desktop and laptops) Long before then we should have a Windows 8 Tablet which just might give the first real competition to the iPad – particularly in the enterprise.

Footnote – So the official Apple name for the iPad3 is ‘New iPad’. Be interesting to see what they call the iPad4. Indeed what will the ‘New iPad’ be called when there is an iPad4? Something not right here!
