In a move that will boost its file sharing and collaboration capabilities, enterprise social network provider Yammer has acquired UK-based startup oneDrum, for an undisclosed sum.
oneDrum’s software enables file folders to be shared and synchronised across multiple users’ desktops and brings collaboration to Microsoft Office applications so multiple authors can work on documents in real time, so it is a valuable extension for Yammer. Although it will not compete with Google Docs or Dropbox, oneDrum will add these types of popular capabilities to Yammer and will coat existing content with a social gloss. Yammer is not in the same league as Salesforce.com or Facebook for business or consumer based social networking but it is gaining a name for itself and when anecdotal evidence indicates that when users leave Facebook they are turning to Yammer. That suggests that it too will be acquired but for the moment it has scope to grow.
