The Aakash '$35 tablet' saga just gets more and more intriguing!
Having vented its spleen at IIT Rajasthan, the government agency originally overseeing the project that is meant to deliver low-cost tablets to Indian students (see Aakash ‘kiss’ turns into a tongue-bite), UK manufacturer Datawind has reportedly issued a defamation notice to the Indian Cellular Association “for spreading false reports … in the media and in government meetings including places such as the department of IT”. Needless to say, the ICA believes the claims are “baseless”. The project has since been transferred to IIT Bombay “which is in the process of issuing a new purchase order for 1 lakh (100,000) upgraded units”.
I suspect that Indian students will need to stick to their calculators for quite a while longer!
