Nine years ago in my Prince’s Trust ‘State of the ICT Nation’ speech in 2003, I introduced Holway’s Martini Moment. The ability to access the internet ‘Anytime, Anywhere and from Any device’. The slogan has been much repeated – including in the launch of the BBC’s iPlayer. I used my ability to listen to The Archers as my ‘test'. Remember, back in 200,3 you could only listen to latest edition of The Archers if you were in range of a BBC transmitter at 7.02pm each evening. I have since listened to The Archers on land and sea throughout the world at ‘anytime’ and, indeed, on a variety of devices – most usually now on my iPad.
But, other than a brief experiment on a Singapore Airlines flight a few years back, I have never been able to do it ‘in flight’. Now, Virgin Atlantic is to offer mobile, text and internet access on its flights for a cost equal to normal roaming costs. See Daily Telegraph article.
Although I am delighted that I can now listen to The Archers or access my emails inflight, I am less than enamoured about receiving mobile calls. Actually my concern is not about ‘me’, but being in a cabin where everyone is on their mobile phones. My journey on the train to London each day is actually ruined by the shouted and one-way mobile conversations I have to endure. I always head for the ‘quiet carriage’ but most people ignore the signs.
Which leads me on to question what we want from ‘progress’ in tech. I am giving my very last Prince's Trust speech in Sept. The series will have raised £1m by then since I started in 2002. It is called 'The Last Time' so you can guess the theme music! I want to end with a prediction of what we will do with IT when I am 80 (2027) The crazier the idea the more likely it is. So can I invite HotViews readers to supply a prediction please?
The very first I received was from my friend Susan Scrupski in the US who replied “I'm sitting here with a bunch of tech bloggers at SAP's annual event. The consensus is that we will completely unplug by 2027-- disconnect and live in caves as technology will have so consumed our lives, we will all need to learn how to be human again”.-
Footnote – In 2027 I might come back to review these predictions as a hologram – as I understand Freddie Mercury will be featured in the 10th anniversary of the musical 'We will rock you' next week!
