Following hot on the heels of archrival Infosys’ announcement last week of its UK apprentice programme (see The Infosys Apprentice - You're Hired!), Bangalore-based Wipro is to launch an intern programme targeted at UK university students. The ‘India Gateway’ initiative will see the first batch of 20 UK students head off to India in September for a year, culminating with 3 months working with ‘live’ project teams.
Wipro’s programme is therefore quite different in operation to that of Infosys, which is essentially an onshore apprentice scheme with the opportunity for onshore jobs for successful candidates. Nonetheless, the opportunity to spend a year working in India with one of the top-tier offshore services firms will surely be both a skills-building and a character-building experience for those fortunate enough to earn a place on Wipro's programme.
