I was quite surprised to read the FT headline Fujitsu £2b broadband plan to threaten BT. Fujitsu is not a name I’d naturally associate with UK broadband provision. As readers will know, the UK Govt is making c£830m available to subsidise the building of a superfast broadband network. It had been expected that this would go to BT who planned to spend it largely in rural areas. Fujitsu’s bid for these public funds would concentrate on rural areas. Must admit that is music to my ears here in superslow rural Farnham!
Virgin Media and TalkTalk are both supporting Fujitsu and Ed Vaizey ‘welcomed’ Fujitsu’s initiatives.
BT would obviously be a big loser if Fujitsu won the funding
