Managed services and co-location firm, Pulsant, has acquired Scottish co-location specialist, ScoLocate, for £26m. ScoLocate is expected to deliver revenues of £8.5m this year, which will take Pulsant’s 2012 revenue up to c£39m.

The purchase is a neat add-on for Pulsant - which was formed from the merger of DediPower, Lumison and Blue Square Data - and ticks several boxes. It gives Pulsant a second data centre in Scotland - taking the firm’s total number of data centres across the UK up to 10. ScoLocate’s Edinburgh data centre currently hosts over 30 telecommunication carriers, and once Pulsant links it into its network of data centres, customers will be able to connect into those telco providers. In addition, ScoLocate gives Pulsant a stronger presence in the public and financial services sectors.

There is also a longer-term opportunity for Pulsant to convert existing ScoLocate co-location customers (70% of ScoLocate’s revenue is from co-lo – and the balance from managed hosting and managed networks) into buyers of Pulsant’s other services – namely managed hosting, managed cloud and managed networks. In the past 6-12 months, Pulsant has noted an uptick in the number of customers who want to take these services on top of existing co-lo agreements and intends to take further advantage of this trend.
