In my article yesterday- Cisco warns – I noted Cisco’s video conferencing sales were up 39%. Several eagle-eyed readers emailed to point out that this was almost entirely due to Cisco’s $3.4b purchase of Tandberg TV in Apr 10. I am happy to put the record straight.
Actually video messaging was considered to be at the heart of the much commented upon purchase of Skype by Microsoft. See our Microsoft confirms Skype deal. The interesting point here is that Skype’s major corporate marketplace is amongst SMEs not big corporations. SMEs have really taken to Skype’s cheap/free audio and video conferencing facilities. But they ‘pay a price’ in usually quite poor quality. Even here at TechMarketView, Skype conferencing is just about OK for internal stuff but we would never use for clients. It will be interesting to see how these quality issues play with Microsoft and its generally ‘large corporation’ client base.
