One of things that you have to get used to as you get older is the application of the adjective 'veteran' to every comment you make in the press - as in 'veteran analyst Richard Holway said.." it seemed to happen to me (and now Anthony as well) when we passed sixty. But in the FT they headline the appointment of Dawn Airey as head of EMEA at Yahoo as 'the Veteran TV executive'. Airey was born in 1960!
Actually this is a very interesting appointment. Airey last ran TV station Five In the UK for RTL, but has held important positions at ITV and BSkyB too. She is very highly regarded as a tough cookie. There is now a battle royale brewing for advertising £s between the 'conventional' media (particularly TV) and digital. Up until now, digital has grown fast but was still a small fraction of the TV spend. No more. Digital could overtake TV before long. Obviously Google and Facebook are the main players here. So Yahoo’s continued relevance rather depends on them upping their game and becoming a serious contender. Personally i rate Yahoo as it has some great content. I use Yahoo Finance many times a day. So they do have a base upon which to build.
Yahoo's share price has doubled since the appointment of Marissa Meyer as CEO a year back, when I added them to the 'Holway Portfolio' and up 36% YTD.
