Either I am easily impressed or the market has got it wrong. I listened in to the Apple announcement earlier this evening and I really found the announcements pretty interesting. Conversely, Apple stock fell 2.3% immediately afterwards
Apple announced a new operating system iOS7. They also said that five apps – iphoto, iMovie, Pages, Numbers and Keynote - would be bundled in free.
Then they announced the iPhone 5C. It not only comes in 5 colours. But the iOS7 screen matches those colours, the back lights up and you can buy a case with ‘MotoX’ holes in a different colour. The combinations are – if not ‘endless’ then at least interesting. Actually it looked pretty ‘cool’ – something that used to apply to all Apple products.
The iPhone 5C 16gb/32gb will cost $99/$199 on a two year contract. But whether that is cheap enough to appeal in the big China market is questionable. It certainly retains Apple’s premium positioning.
Then they announced the iPhone 5S - the first ever 64bit mobile with an ARM processor packing ‘over 1 billion transistors’. It’s 56x faster than the first iPhone.
Its got a new motion co-processor based on contextual awareness – the M7 wearable technology gateway. Now, that is really wow and, in my opinion, is the first step towards the kind of health/fitness gadget (iWatch) we have predicted. Initially it will link with a new Nike+ Move armband. It will tell you how fast you are going, uphill, downhill etc. The camera in the 5S is also pretty impressive. It basically takes burst mode pictures automatically then gives you the best in focus shot. New 120fps slow-mo too and a great new flash.
Most interesting feature is the fingerprint security – Touch ID. You don’t need to lock/unlock your iPhone with a password anymore. Just press the start button with your finger – any finger in any 360 degree rotation. It will also work instead of you password to iTunes. I can see it being on all Apple products before long. The iPhone 5S costs the same as the iPhone 5 and, surprisingly, only $100 more than the 5c.
Well, I was impressed. Just have to see what the public thinks when it goes on sale on 20th Sept.
