iPad - Today the World

iPadsAfter writing Facebook – Tomorrow the World earlier, I read iPad domination to continue in StrategyEye. I’m sure the news that Q3 iPad shipments would be c14.4m against analyst estimates of 10m-12m will spur the market and depress competitors. It really still looks as if the iPad is ‘the only tablet in town’.

But it was the internet stats which amazed even me. “According to comScore figures, Apple’s device accounts for 89% of tablet traffic worldwide, with that number rising to 97% in the US. Looking at all non-PC web traffic, the iPad is responsible for more than a fifth of all internet traffic in both the UK and the US, with that number hitting 33.5% in Canada. iPad owners also consumer $400 more Wi-Fi data every month than the average iPhone, iPod or Android owner, according to cloud services provider Meraki.”

Now, given that iPad adoption is still in its ‘early adopter’ stage (5% of the UK population have an iPad but only 1.7% of the UK population) the fact that already the iPad accounts for 20% of non-PC traffic is nothing short of amazing. On the other hand, anyone who owns an iPad will realise how addictive it is. I’m sure I already spend more time on my iPad than any other device – even including my PC.

The disruptive affects of this across the whole sector – from ISPs to the hardware vendors – is huge.
