Clik here to view.I note that Stephen Kelly has a new job. See Independent – Maude names new boss to kick start public sector mutuals. Kelly, ex-CEO of Micro Focus ( see our Sept 09 post Kelly resigns from Micro Focus – and many others before and since!) is to be the Crown Commercial Representative heading up mutuals, involving many public sector workers, to take over government services. These are often described as ‘John Lewis-style’ mutuals. Their scope is, of course, not limited to IT but could embrace the running of a huge range of public sector activities. Kelly’s job is to search out the entrepreneurial ideas and make sure they get the right private sector backing and funding.
Firms involve in Public Sector BPO now have a new ‘competitor’. Indeed, in my own discussions with Government, they are very keen to see such services ’outsourced’ to these mutuals rather than to the ‘established’ BPO players. There are clearly attractions on both sides. But let’s not pretend that taking a bunch of public sector workers and turning them into a commercial concern is going to be easy and without its share of problems and disasters along the way.
