Several readers have emailed me as a result of my  Welcome increase in GCSE ICT entries post last week to point out the vast difference between GCSE ICT and GCSE Computing. Roger Graham’s grand daughter got an A in ICT and an A in Computing (amongst 8A* and 3As – what a clever girl!!). As Roger said “The point is that ICT is all about spreadsheets and generic use of computers but GCSE Computing is all about programming and is a route to a more professional occupation”.

GSCE Computing is a pretty new subject and is a result of much lobbying to change the curriculum away from learning Office to teaching our youngsters to code. It is likely that very few are actually taking Computing yet and, indeed, the numbers I quoted are currently for the two subjects.

Karen Price at e-skills is trying to get the broken out figures and, indeed, will lobby for them to be separated in the future.

More youngsters developing a love of coding – that’s really what the UK needs. And, before you ask, coding was the one thing I was really good at back in the 1960s. It was the ‘rock’ on which my so-called career was built.
